Truck torque vs horsepower: what matters under load?
Truck torque vs horsepower: what matters under load? — practical HGV technical guidance from Vehicle Tuning Solutions.
Practical guidance from Vehicle Tuning Solutions, drawing on hands-on HGV mechanical and ECU calibration experience.
Torque and pulling performance
Torque is turning force at the crankshaft. The torque delivered at the wheels also depends on the gearbox and final-drive ratio. More usable torque over the working RPM range can improve response under load.
Power and sustained climbing
Power combines torque with engine speed. Sustained climbing at a given road speed needs enough power to overcome gravity and resistance; torque alone does not determine hill-climbing speed.
Why the torque curve matters
A smooth, usable torque curve can matter more to a working truck than a large peak number. Calibration must respect component temperatures, smoke limits, clutch and driveline capacity.
Gearbox limitations
Automated gearboxes make decisions based on load, speed and programmed strategies. An engine remap is not automatically a gearbox remap and cannot cure worn driveline components.
Technical information is general guidance, not a confirmed specification for your vehicle. Exact ECU compatibility, output and suitability must be checked individually.
