Can HGV remapping improve fuel economy?
Can HGV remapping improve fuel economy? — practical HGV technical guidance from Vehicle Tuning Solutions.
Practical guidance from Vehicle Tuning Solutions, drawing on hands-on HGV mechanical and ECU calibration experience.
Why fuel consumption may change
A calibrated increase in usable torque can sometimes reduce downshifts on familiar routes. That does not automatically mean fewer litres burned: throttle demand, road speed, payload, gradient, gearing, weather and driver behaviour all matter.
How to measure results
Compare litres per 100 km or actual litres consumed across repeated, similar routes before and after calibration. Record payload, idle time, route profile and average speed. Avoid relying solely on dashboard MPG.
What should be checked first
Tyre pressures, air leaks, brake drag, injector and boost faults, service condition and existing fault codes can all influence consumption. A remap should not be used to disguise a mechanical fault.
Are 5–15% savings guaranteed?
No. Published percentage claims are not a reliable prediction for an individual fleet. VTS discusses the potential and the limits, rather than promising a fixed percentage.
Technical information is general guidance, not a confirmed specification for your vehicle. Exact ECU compatibility, output and suitability must be checked individually.
